Raw Foods Diet Drink and Smoothie RecipesThis is a featured page

Drinks - Raw Food DietSome tips on beverages within the raw foods diet:

  • Water and juices are the most popular choices of raw foodists. Watch out for bottled juices, which often contain preservatives. Always order fresh squeezed juice or make your own. The same goes for smoothies--it's better to make your own! Remember that packaged fruit products may contain additives you want to avoid. Make yours from whole fruits.

  • Alcohol is out, but organic wine lives within the raw food guidelines.

  • Coffee and tea do not live within the raw food guidelines. However you may brew some sun tea – tea that is made by putting water and dried herbs (it’s best to grow and dry your own to ensure it’s organic) in a jug in the sun and naturally heated – because it is unlikely to rise over 118 degrees.

  • With smoothies make sure you buy whole fruits, not packaged purees which tend to have sugar and color added. Any ripe whole fruit can make a smoothie when popped in the blender or food processor, including bananas, blueberries, raspberries, ripe melons, nectarines, peaches, pitted cherries, strawberries, mangos and kiwi.

When you are making, particularly raw food, smoothies, the machine you make it in is important. A heavy duty blender, such as the BlenTek or the VitaMix, will make the nutrients more available, and will last longer, given the hard usage over time. I'm not just talking about the fact that we may use the machine more often than many, but that the stuff we pack into it is hard on the works of the blender.

I have owned a VitaMix for about 20 years, and about 2 months ago, got a BlenTek. I really love the BlendTek. It is programmed for the various uses, so you don't overdo the blending, or under do it. With these type of blenders, if you go too long, you can actually cook the contents. It doesn't actually boil, and so it destroys less of the nutrients than stove-top methods, but a hot smoothie is less appealing to me.

My wife and I have a green smoothie every morning, and a sweeter one in the evening every day.

I'm trying to decide if I want to do this diet, but I'm not sure about getting enough calcium with no diary allowed. Can someone recommend a good suplement?

I've never seen this before.. where can I find it? Is it in regular grocery stores, or will I have to order it special?
