Getting Started on the Raw Foods Diet
Congratulations! You've decided to try The Raw Way. . . Now what?
This is more than a diet for many people; it's a way of life. Because of that, you'll need to think about food--and food preparation--differently. So, before you start a raw foods plan, consider the equipment, planning, shopping, and preparation that will be involved in this new way of eating.
What helped you during the transition to this diet? Share tips on how to get started.
- Develop an eating plan: Gather recipes for the week; search through cookbooks and websites for ideas.
- As with any diet, the key to staying the course is shopping well. Stock your kitchen regularly – at least once a week -- with enough fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts to take you through the week.
- Plan a day in advance for items that need to be sprouted or soaked overnight including grains and some nuts, depending on the recipe.
- Invest in some quality equipment that will make preparation faster and more convenient

Ok. I am going raw as of today, so we'll say about 13 hours now, since I know I definitely didn't eat after midnight. Here's my plan- I want to get my eczema to clear up. I haven't been going to the chiro recently, and I starting sneaking wheat (pizza/pasta) which I am not supposed to be eating). My eczema has flared up from dietary indiscretions. We have a wedding coming up in 4 weeks, and I am hoping my eczema will clear up by then after 4 weeks of raw. I have been veg for 2 years (with several periods of veganism) until this this summer when it was discovered i was sensitive to wheat (and corn). So, recently I have been eating more dairy and also been eating fish because I have some Italian heritage and have been feeling sort of devastated about not being able to eat pasta. What can I expect in terms of withdrawal symptoms? right now, I am hungry but have been trying to eat my "breakfast" for hours (it is hard to eat raw because you actually have to chew everything :) I experienced withdrawal when I gave up meat 2 years ago, and the withdrawal primarily consisted of feverish feelings and visions of eating a grilled chicken sandwhich, the feverish symptoms lasted months, though. I'm a little scared of how sick I might feel from going raw, but I am committed to doing this for the next four weeks at least (at the wedding, we will have to eat(or pretend to eat chicken) it was either that or cow, so i went with the lesser of 2 evils) Any comments/vote of confidence is appreciated. I am going to be tough about this, and dh is doing it too, so I think I will make it at least the 4 weeks.

My doctor also gave me some great supplements, B12 shots, Calcium, Magnesium, and I am looking for a good iron supplement, although we are suppose to get that from the greens. Ask your doc about it.

I started off with doctors orders, right away, just jumped in...first few days were really tough, after that, it's really not that tough, you begin to adjust and add new things. I would say I am 90 - 95 % raw food, occasionally I will add a tablespoon of tuna to a salad and I still have my coffee, everything else is raw. Maybe as I get more equipment and learn new recipes, I can go 100%, but otherwise things are going great!

Going raw all at once is a real concern.... your digestive system will indeed back up and give you all sorts of grief. Start by adding raw foods to your meals...fruit at breakfast, salad with lunch and dinner, that sort of thing. After a while (weeks? months? years?) you transition into more and more raw foods until you find you're eating mostly raw. Eating this way does address weight loss, and all manners of disorders right themselves, but I would emphasize going slowly into it so as not to create havoc in the body.
